GOING DIGITAL
Founded in 1934 as a pro photo supply store, New York Citys venerable Alkit ProCamera now also offers premier digital imaging and output services. "Clients who always came to us for their film, camera and rental needs would go somewhere else for digital, so the decision was made to change all that," says Linda Peters, who was hired on three years ago as director of digital operations for Alkits new ADI branch (Alkit Digital Imaging). "We now have a state-of-the-art 5,000-square-foot facility with a full-time staff of 15 to provide photographers with the best there is in digital. They dont have to go anywhere else anymore."
ADIs digital production studio specializes in scanning, retouching and digital output working with Kodak Photo CD, Kodak Pro CD, Scitex Scans, Iris Prints, Roland Prints, Large-Format Inkjet Prints and Fujix 4000 and Canon Prints. Their Scitex Eversmart Pro Scanner produces high-resolution quality scans at a 4.0 density range and 8000 pixels. The Scitex can scan originals from reflective art up to 12 x 17 inches and transparencies/negatives from 35mm, 21/4, 4 x 5, panoramic, 8 x 10. Files can be requested as CMYK, RGB, grayscale to TIFF, EPS and Scitex CT.
In Iris prints, Alkit utilizes the Iris Graphics wide-format Iris GPRINT printer to meet the specific needs of photographers, artists, designers and other imaging professionals who require color-accurate digital prints on archival media. Alkits Roland Hi-Fi Jet Prints run the color gamut with near-photographic image quality printed on a 1440 x 720 dpi matrix with outstanding lightfastness for both commercial and fine-art applications. They will accommodate roll-fed media up to 50 inches x 100 feet and Roland prints are the ideal solution for high-quality, large-format artistic creations and compelling POP and trade-show displays.
"We have acquired Phase One digital imaging camera backs and plans are in the works for further growth in our digital services," Peters adds. "Well always have whatever our clients needand then some."
Peters continues: "Photographers can sit down with our staff and get exactly what theyre looking for, which means more control over the final piece. Its not like dropping off an order with the receptionist at a lab and coming back later. We form relationships with our clients, and thats why they keep coming back."
